SparkFun MLX90640 IR Array Breakout - 55 Degree FOV
The MLX90640 SparkFun IR Array Breakout is equipped with a 32x24 array of thermopile sensors, essentially creating a low-resolution thermal imaging camera. With this breakout board, you can capture surface temperatures from several meters away with an accuracy of ±1.5°C (best case). To simplify the creation of the low-resolution infrared image, all communication is handled exclusively via I2C with Sparkfun's handy Qwiic system. Soldering connections for pin headers are also available on the board, so you can plug the sensor into a breadboard. This particular IR Array Breakout has a field of view of 55°x35° and a temperature measurement range of -40°C to 300°C. The MLX90640 IR Array has pull-up resistors connected to the I2C bus. Both can be removed by cutting the tracks on the appropriate jumpers on the back of the board. Please note that the MLX90640 requires complex calculations to be performed by the host platform, so a regular Arduino Uno (or equivalent) does not have adequate RAM or flash to perform the complex calculations required to convert the raw pixel data into temperature data. You need a microcontroller with 20,000Bytes or more RAM. To achieve this, we recommend a Teensy 3.1 or higher (An ESP32 should also be able to handle this).
Warning: The MLX90640 is only compatible with 3.3V controllers and will be destroyed if powered with 5V.
