SparkFun ESP8266 Thing

The ESP8266 Thing is an Arduino compatible ESP8266 development board from Sparkfun. This little microcontroller is very powerful and also has a Wi-Fi radio module. The module is compatible with the Arduino IDE and can be programmed directly. With the ESP8266, you can easily connect your projects to the internet. The board is often used for IoT (Internet of Things) applications or simply the internet of things. For example, you can easily connect your data logger to the internet and log the data to a cloud. Since the ESP8266 is a pure 3.3V controller, you must operate all inputs and outputs only with 3.3V! If you still want to connect or control something with 5V, you have to use a logic level converter, which you can also find in our shop.

Important info about the ESP8266 Thing:

The board does not have a USB-Serial converter built in, so you cannot simply program the ESP8266 Thing via the USB port, but need an FTDI programming adapter. Advantages of the FTDI not being built into the board are:

1. Lower price, making the ESP8266 Thing more attractive
2. Lower deep sleep current, so mobile battery-powered applications can also be realized (LiPo connection with charge controller on the board available)
