M5Stack Chain Mono 8x8 LED Matrix White

The Chain Mono is an LED display module from the Chain series by M5Stack with an 8x8 matrix of monochrome white LEDs. It uses an STM32G031G8U6 as a controller, autonomously driving the matrix and managing communication via the Chain-Bus protocol. Connection is made serially via UART at 115200 bps, with two HY2.0-4P ports allowing the chaining of multiple Chain modules into a daisy chain. For example, the Chain Dual Key with ESP32-S3 serves as the main controller of the chain, addressing the individual modules via the bus. The firmware supports independent control of individual pixels as well as writing entire images via a framebuffer with rapid full-screen refresh. Integrated ASCII character generation displays characters directly, while scrolling text is also possible. Brightness and screen rotation (0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees) can be set via command. Power is supplied with 5 V via the Chain-Bus; at maximum brightness, the module consumes only 22.29 mA. The Arduino-Library M5Chain and UiFlow2 are available for programming. With a size of only 24 × 24 × 16 mm, the module is suitable for pixel light creations, status displays, and creative light signs. A Chain Bridge connector for chaining is included.

Recommended Accessories:

Features:

  • LED matrix with 8x8 monochrome white LEDs driven by its own STM32G031 controller
  • Chain-Bus protocol over UART at 115200 bps allows chaining multiple Chain modules via two HY2.0-4P ports
  • Framebuffer with rapid full-screen refresh supports single pixel control and batch writing of entire images
  • ASCII character generation displays characters and scrolling text directly on the matrix
  • Brightness control and rotation in 90-degree steps can be configured via command
  • Compact design of 24 × 24 × 16 mm and low power consumption of a maximum of 22.29 mA facilitate integration

Application Examples:

  • Status display for smart home devices, servers, or IoT sensors with symbols and characters
  • Creative light signs and pixel art projects from multiple chained matrix modules
  • Scrolling text display for short messages at booths, showcases, or shop windows
  • Desktop ambient lighting with changing patterns and animations
  • Interactive displays in combination with Chain Encoder, Chain Key, and other Chain modules
